How to convince the parents? I'd suggest you create a report or a powerpoint presentation for them.



First, research the program you plan to use (I recommend AFS and YFU -- I believe Rotary is now closed for next year). Show how the program is certified by the state department and CSIET -- both very important. Give a history of the program.



Second, research the money. How much will it cost? If you have the money, show that. You'll also need about $200 - $300 a month spending money, and perhaps you can show how you are SAVING them that amount of money by being gone.



Third, give an overview of the top three countries that you are picking. Show the history, culture and explain WHY you picked them.



Fourth, discuss how this will help your future. Colleges and universities love exchange students and often offer preferred admissions and/or scholarships for exchange students. (YFU even has a list of them.) Also, point out how much a second language will benefit you when you join the work force -- an average of $10,000 per year for each language!



Fifth, sit down with your high school counselor and work out a plan so you graduate on time (unless you will be a senior, then it COULD set back your graduation time a semester). Be sure to include any summer and/or correspondence course you might have to take.



Sixth, interview a couple of exchange students at your school. Have THEM tell about it.



THEN, after you've given your presentation, invite the students (and maybe their program representative) to meet with your parents to answer questions.

You can also explain that having an international experience can be a game-changer in today's hard job market.

If there is an exchange student in your school, or someone who came back from an exchange year, you could enlist their help (plus their parents and/ or exchange families), invite them for a coffee so that they can talk to your parents and answer their questions.

It can take a while to convince your parents (it took me two years, but I started early). If they're not ready to let you go this year, you could try again next year (unless you're already a senior?)

i love japan and i want to go on an exchange, but the only scholarship offering there is for me is a ten month stay, and that's too long. please help!How do you get a scholarship for australia to japan exchange that is less than 7 months?Well I did a 10 month exchange with an Australian program and got a scholarship with a program called aiiu. They also used to offer them for shorter stays although I think they may have stopped offering those scholarships last year.

If you can do 10 months then I'd really recommend it. If you can't do it because of school or something like that's too bad but if u have the chance I really recommend doing the whole 10 months!!

Once you get to 5 or 6 months your Japanese gets to a really good level and making friends is so much easier and well everything just starts to go so well!

You should also look at Wep if you haven't already because perhaps they offer scholarships but I'm not sure.

Anyway if you ever want to talk about exchanges just let me know! I only got back a year ago... so it's still fresh in my memory!!

Whenever I've looked at purchasing a car from a dealer (not many occasions as it's a rip off) the cars they sell always have no tax. This is then an added expense of 190 to get the car legal for the road. However, when I ask any dealer to value my car for a part-exchange, they always ask how much tax is left and insist that it is left on the car. If I say I'm refunding the tax, they adjust the price by a couple hundred quid. Is this the same as leaving up to 190 sellotaped to your windscreen when you chop in a car? Generally this is the case, although there is nothing to stop you from asking if you can keep it, all we used to do was send them back and get a refund (although believe it or not keeping a tax disc would not mean that the salesman got more commission - it was not taken into account in the price of your car) Remember, any valuation for your car is negotiable, a good source is glass' guide (used by the trade) you can value your own car online (they charge a fee - but remember you will probably get more than this extra for your car by having the insider knowledge) these valuations do not take into account any remaining tax on the car, therefore it should not be deducted if you ask to keep the tax disc. I would always suggest checking something like Glass' before going to a dealer, that way you have a fair idea of what they are going to offer you. One other tip is to simply ask if they will tax the car for you included in the price. Most dealers will, if it is the difference between getting a deal or not, only do this at the point where you are actually going to buy the car though. I.e tell the salesman, if you give me 12 months road tax, (they will never give you a full tank) but 1/2 tank of fuel, and try for something like mats, or headlamp protectors (these do not cost them much) then you will buy the car TODAY. It puts them on the spot to meet your demands then, and will almost certainly work.



One other tip - all dealerships will try to sell you both paint protection treatement and gap insurance. Never buy these at the prices they offer you them at, it is very easy to get at least 100 off each product - I have never paid more than 99 for paint protection and know that some dealers charge as much as 599!

If there's any weeks remaining on the disc, just remember to pocket it before you leave the car. It's just another game they play to improve their profit margins. Also make sure you've got just enough petrol to get it to the dealer. You can be pretty sure there's next to no fuel in your new car when you get it.

If your part exchange is not good enough for them to sell on their forecourt then they will sell the car on to a 'Trader' You can be as sure as hell that they won't let that car go with the remaining tax. They will get the disc refunded by the DVLA. The car dealers guides do not value a car including the tax disc. It is just a way of the dealer adding a little more commission in to the deal.
