How does warranty exchange for a cell phone work?

My ATT phone, the LG Xenon, is broken and the tech support said I could do the warranty exchange for it. I was just wondering, when you exchange a phone, do you have to get the same exact phone or can you get a different color or a different model?How does warranty exchange for a cell phone work?Such a request would lead to suspicion that you broke your phone deliberately simply to get a different phone for free. Warranty terms provide for a replacement, not a swap
