How to become an exchange student?

I want to become an exchange student and study in Ireland, but i don't know how, so any information would be appreciated. How to become an exchange student?I am not sure how to do it during the school year but there is a program called People to People or maybe national ambassadors association. It last around 20 days and you go to several different countries and experience a lot. It cost around $5,500 depending on what trip it is.

How does increase in interest rates lead to an increase in exchange rates?

Can someone explain it to me plainly? ALSO, I'm wondering if it works vice versa - does lowering interest rates lower the exchange rate? How does increase in interest rates lead to an increase in exchange rates?Hello,

Yes you are correct in what you are saying. I will use and example as it's easier to follow the reasoning. An increase in the interest rates is always good news for savers - if the IR is 2% and you put 10 into the bank you will earn 20p if the IR is 3% you earn 30p. Now think about this with larger amounts of money, you could earn alot more by putting your money into a bank where the IR is higher. Let's say you have US$ and the UK Bank of England increases its IR from 2% to 3%. When you move your money, you are increasing the supply of US$ in the market (ECO 101: increase in supply lowers the price), you are also wanting UK (increase in demand for increases the price) - put these two factors together and you will find that the gains strength. When a currency becomes stronger it means it is worth more of the other currency it is compared against. 1 = $ 1.5 --%26gt; 1 = $1.6

The increase in the IR will lead to the strengthening against the $ leading to it being worth more $. The opposite is also true.

    Hope this helps.

Where would you exchange the American dollar to Japanese yen and how much can you exchange to bring to Japan?

So say you are moving to Japan and you a lot of money. Where do you go to exchange your money to yen and how much can you do at once? Say you had a million dollars, could you exchange all that into yen and then go to Japan with it? If not then whats the limit? Also i doubt that you could carry all your money on a plane so what woudl you do witht he money so that you;d have it when yuo reach Japan?Where would you exchange the American dollar to Japanese yen and how much can you exchange to bring to Japan? You can bring as much money as you want, but you have to declare it, and you will raise suspicions if you are carrying a large amount of cash. You can expect to be questioned by airport security, and have your stuff searched thoroughly. Also, by carrying lots of cash through an airport you run the risk that it will be confiscated or stolen.

If you are moving to Japan, you close out your bank account in the US, and instead of getting cash you get a certified check from your US bank, and then when you get to Japan you deposit the check in a Japanese bank or a Japanese branch of a US bank. It's a lot safer to carry the check than cash, and if the check gets lost or stolen you can get it replaced.

As far as I know, there's nothing to stop you from bringing $1 million from the US to Japan, but many countries do limit how much money someone can bring in or take out.Where would you exchange the American dollar to Japanese yen and how much can you exchange to bring to Japan? You leave it in your US bank account. After you open an account in Japan, you just have the money wired into the Japanese account. You would not carry that much cash because most countries require you declare cash above a certain amount. If you have a million dollars in cash on you, you will be questioned to prove you got it legally.

How many people are willing to be or to have an exchange student and why?

I would really like to know your opinions on exchange students and why you think the way you do about them. How many people are willing to be or to have an exchange student and why?My family didn't exactly have a traditional exchange student, she was just placed with us for 2 weeks (during one of her school breaks) when I was in high school, but it was a really good experience. She has come back to visit five times since then (usually for about a month each time), and when my sister and I were traveling in France, we spent a couple of weeks with her and her family.

I am a teacher now, and last year I had an exchange student in one of my classes. She was very polite and had a better work ethic than most of the other students in the class.

I have heard stories about people having trouble with exchange students, but my personal experience has been good. I think it would be important to have a pretty strict screening process both for the students and for the host families, and to make sure their values and personalities will match well.

How do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time?

I am wanting to become a foreign exchange student but its almost to late to sing up. The only reason I didn't start to convince them earlier was because I didn't have all my money saved up. But now i am trying my hardest to become one! Please tell me how to convince my parents!?How do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time?Katie --

You can still go, but will need to get our application in soon.

How to convince the parents? I'd suggest you create a report or a powerpoint presentation for them.

First, research the program you plan to use (I recommend AFS and YFU -- I believe Rotary is now closed for next year). Show how the program is certified by the state department and CSIET -- both very important. Give a history of the program.

Second, research the money. How much will it cost? If you have the money, show that. You'll also need about $200 - $300 a month spending money, and perhaps you can show how you are SAVING them that amount of money by being gone.

Third, give an overview of the top three countries that you are picking. Show the history, culture and explain WHY you picked them.

Fourth, discuss how this will help your future. Colleges and universities love exchange students and often offer preferred admissions and/or scholarships for exchange students. (YFU even has a list of them.) Also, point out how much a second language will benefit you when you join the work force -- an average of $10,000 per year for each language!

Fifth, sit down with your high school counselor and work out a plan so you graduate on time (unless you will be a senior, then it COULD set back your graduation time a semester). Be sure to include any summer and/or correspondence course you might have to take.

Sixth, interview a couple of exchange students at your school. Have THEM tell about it.

THEN, after you've given your presentation, invite the students (and maybe their program representative) to meet with your parents to answer questions.

Good luck -- this is a lot to put together, but if you do a good job it might go a long way towards getting their permission! How do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time?did you ever get to be a foreign exchange student?

How do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time? The fact that you have the money saved up is good: it can prove to them that you are responsible and mature. You can also explain that having an international experience can be a game-changer in today's hard job market.

If there is an exchange student in your school, or someone who came back from an exchange year, you could enlist their help (plus their parents and/ or exchange families), invite them for a coffee so that they can talk to your parents and answer their questions.

It can take a while to convince your parents (it took me two years, but I started early). If they're not ready to let you go this year, you could try again next year (unless you're already a senior?)

Parents worry about their kids, so if you can manage to lessen their fears, it will defnitively help. How do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time?Talk about ways that you are responsible, tell them how much you want to do it, tell them how it looks good for college, tell them how learning a new language could really benefit your life (for careers...). If you want, you could contact the study abroad program, and they could talk to your parents or could put you in touch with a returnee who had a good experience.

This is a good discussion to get you started http://www.cultures-shocked.org/Joomla/fHow do you convince your parents to let you become an exchange student in a short amount of time?Maybe tell them that in the future travel will be too expensive for most people since the world's oil supply is getting lower and lower and more people will be fighting over what is left. How do you get a scholarship for australia to japan exchange that is less than 7 months?

i love japan and i want to go on an exchange, but the only scholarship offering there is for me is a ten month stay, and that's too long. please help! How do you get a scholarship for australia to japan exchange that is less than 7 months?Well I did a 10 month exchange with an Australian program and got a scholarship with a program called aiiu. They also used to offer them for shorter stays although I think they may have stopped offering those scholarships last year.

If you can do 10 months then I'd really recommend it. If you can't do it because of school or something like that's too bad but if u have the chance I really recommend doing the whole 10 months!!

Once you get to 5 or 6 months your Japanese gets to a really good level and making friends is so much easier and well everything just starts to go so well!

You should also look at Wep if you haven't already because perhaps they offer scholarships but I'm not sure.

Anyway if you ever want to talk about exchanges just let me know! I only got back a year ago... so it's still fresh in my memory!!

They give you about 40% of what they will charge for it in the store. You never really get what the garment is truly worth, so unless you are ready to part with your clothes, don't sell them.

Example: They'll take a $60 shirt which is like new and sell it for $22.50. You would get $9.

When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?

Whenever I've looked at purchasing a car from a dealer (not many occasions as it's a rip off) the cars they sell always have no tax. This is then an added expense of 190 to get the car legal for the road. However, when I ask any dealer to value my car for a part-exchange, they always ask how much tax is left and insist that it is left on the car. If I say I'm refunding the tax, they adjust the price by a couple hundred quid. Is this the same as leaving up to 190 sellotaped to your windscreen when you chop in a car? Is this widely practiced? When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?I used to work as a car salesman. Generally this is the case, although there is nothing to stop you from asking if you can keep it, all we used to do was send them back and get a refund (although believe it or not keeping a tax disc would not mean that the salesman got more commission - it was not taken into account in the price of your car) Remember, any valuation for your car is negotiable, a good source is glass' guide (used by the trade) you can value your own car online (they charge a fee - but remember you will probably get more than this extra for your car by having the insider knowledge) these valuations do not take into account any remaining tax on the car, therefore it should not be deducted if you ask to keep the tax disc. I would always suggest checking something like Glass' before going to a dealer, that way you have a fair idea of what they are going to offer you. One other tip is to simply ask if they will tax the car for you included in the price. Most dealers will, if it is the difference between getting a deal or not, only do this at the point where you are actually going to buy the car though. I.e tell the salesman, if you give me 12 months road tax, (they will never give you a full tank) but 1/2 tank of fuel, and try for something like mats, or headlamp protectors (these do not cost them much) then you will buy the car TODAY. It puts them on the spot to meet your demands then, and will almost certainly work.

One other tip - all dealerships will try to sell you both paint protection treatement and gap insurance. Never buy these at the prices they offer you them at, it is very easy to get at least 100 off each product - I have never paid more than 99 for paint protection and know that some dealers charge as much as 599!

Hope this helps - good luck finding your new car! When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?Yep. That's exactly what they do.

If there's any weeks remaining on the disc, just remember to pocket it before you leave the car. It's just another game they play to improve their profit margins. Also make sure you've got just enough petrol to get it to the dealer. You can be pretty sure there's next to no fuel in your new car when you get it.

    Good luck.

Cheer. When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?The remaining tax should be sorted out in the deal. If your part exchange is not good enough for them to sell on their forecourt then they will sell the car on to a 'Trader' You can be as sure as hell that they won't let that car go with the remaining tax. They will get the disc refunded by the DVLA. The car dealers guides do not value a car including the tax disc. It is just a way of the dealer adding a little more commission in to the deal.

If they do keep your old car and sell it again - you would be able to go past the garage in a few days when the car has been cleaned and a price is in the windscreen , but not the tax disc you left in it!When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?The answer to your question is YES all the time and the cash they get back from the tax disc depending on how many months are left on the disc goes straight in to their back pocket,

so you can imagine, if a garage sells around 40 cars a month and each car that comes in for exchange has at least 3 to 4 months of tax left on it, then that is quite a bit of money they are getting with out having to pay any sort of income tax on it,

as Arther Daily the TV character would say a nice little earner

    my son !!!

if you look at any car for sale on any garage forecourt you wont ever see car tax in the window why ?, because the garage owner has cashed then in.When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?arrange a price then remove the tax, or just make sure your on the last month of the tax when you trade in,

or do what i do and haggle to have a years tax added on to your new car to finalise the deal

if your good at this go for free tax plus a years free insurance and a full tank of fuel, they always want your business more than you need them - afterall you can always go somewhere else....When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?you can sort out a price first for the car and then tell them to take the tax of that way you are not cheatedWhen you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?of course it isWhen you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?I have had my tax disc back twice from main dealers and claimed a refund both times.

However, in each case my old car was almost a wreck and going into auction.

I was just glad to be rid actually.

Tax discs like car costs generally are just a drain. As soon as it is spent I assume it gone!!

How to make friends as an exchange student?

I'm leaving in August on a year-long student exchange program. I'll be staying with a host family in Germany and attending a nearby high school. My German certainly isn't the best, and I'm wondering how I'm ever going to be able to make friends.

I'll be living in a small community, much like I do right now, and I know that schools here tend to be rather cliquey and it's sometimes hard for new students to make friends, barring any language or culture barrier.

How would you go about making friends as an exchange student?

Thanks in advance. How to make friends as an exchange student?just act naturally

you must be self-confident but NOT TOO confident !!

you will find a lot of friends as long as your German is going better.

try to have a conversation with them first, don't wait for them

be optimistic and show you friendliness

anyway, learning german culture would help you to know more about German people (and their lifestyles) adapt yourself to the environment

    and most importantly

DO NOT PANIC, think positive, BE NATURAL :)

good luck :PHow to make friends as an exchange student?Hi Adelaide,

I think a strategy that works well for lots of exchange students is to imagine yourself on the other side of the equation. If a foreign student came to your school, what would you find interesting or attracting? And what would make you keep a distance?

Of course, every school community and every culture is different but generally, it helps when you show interest and effort. For example, you can ask other students about (positive!) things you noticed about their culture and let them know that you would like to learn more about it. You can also carry a small notebook with you to write down new words. If the other students see that you have a positive attitude toward their culture, that you are genuinely interested, and that you want to learn, it will be more fun for to share their culture with you and to support you in your learning process. I hope this helps and wish you a great time in Germany!

How can I exchange my quarters for cash?

    Without going to a bank...

Could I just go to King Soopers or something and exchange it at the cash register? How can I exchange my quarters for cash?It depends on how many quarters you have. If it is hundreds of dollars worth, you may not be able to exchange it all at once without going to a bank.

If it is $10 or $20 worth, try - at a time when it is not busy - going to a convenience store and asking if they would like to buy some quarters. I used to be an assistant manager in a convenience store, and if a person came in when it was not busy and asked nicely if we'd like to buy $10 or $20 worth of quarters, we would usually say yes. Most stores like that have to go to a bank at least once daily and buy change in order to have cash register change. So buying it from a customer wouldn't be a big deal.

Hint: if you are going to do this, DON'T wrap the quarters; the clerk who is exchanging them will have to count them before exchanging it for paper currency. How can I exchange my quarters for cash? You can dump them into the CoinStar at the grocery store and get back 88åž„ on the dollar.

How can I get the best exchange rate when I go to America from Japan and vice versa?

I will go back home for a little bit this summer and was wondering what the best ways to exchange money are. Japan's airport doesn't seem too bad but I hear airports are one of the worst places. Traveler cheques apparently give you a little better rate. Exchanging through banks sounds like you get the best rate but I'm also wondering good ways to do that. Then what are good ways to sell your dollars again when you go back to Japan? How can I get the best exchange rate when I go to America from Japan and vice versa?I try to do it at banks in Japan beforehand when I visit the family back home in the states. But the leftover dollars when I come back... I just stash them for the next trip.

Hard to get Japanese yen in banks back in my little hometown, so no choice really.. it's Japanese banks in my big Japanese city, or the airport. I choose the banks. How can I get the best exchange rate when I go to America from Japan and vice versa?http://www.2think.org/dollar-yen-change.How can I get the best exchange rate when I go to America from Japan and vice versa? The Post Office is the best place to get the most for your money. [In Japan]

The worst place is in the US, since its hard to get for them, and they just don't give you the best deal. How can I get the best exchange rate when I go to America from Japan and vice versa?Well, if you have a few dollars left over, i suggest you go to a gaijin bar and see if anyone there my want to buy the dollars from you. Try and find someone to buy them from you. Otherwise, the airport is abosolutly the worst place to buy currency.

if you have a bank account in both countries, use loyds of london to get prehaps the best rate

How can I sign up to become a foreign exchange student in High School?

Has anyone ever been a foreign exchange student? Any advice on where I can start? How can I sign up to become a foreign exchange student in High School?I'm also looking into going abroad during high school. A lot of the foreign exchange kids that I met from school are through an exchange program called AFS. Remember you have to consider how long you want to stay, where and how much its going to cost. I never really considered the cost issue but through AFS they can offer things like financial aid, scholarships and fund raisers. Also you need to talk to your guidance councelor to figure out what credits will transfer over so you can be placed in your correct grade level. I hope this helps get you on your way!

If I become a foreign exchange student senior year how will that effect my credits in school?

I live in America and I would like to be a foreign exchange student in England for my senior year in high school. The only problem is that I don't know if that would be a good idea considering the academic standards needed to graduate when I get back. So can someone explain what will or could happen being a foreign exchange student during senior year please? If I become a foreign exchange student senior year how will that effect my credits in school?Yes, with this experience it counts as a positive point in your curriculum, universities like people that are not afraid to accept opportunities and they really like people that have as different experiences as possible. That is why they are strong in letting people from all over the world apply to the university. If I become a foreign exchange student senior year how will that effect my credits in school?First, I assume that you are a high school student.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but many organizations have suspended their programs to England/Scotland/Wales/UK due to a difficulty in getting student visas. That being said, there are options for other exchanges, even English-speaking ones. If you would like to investigate those options, email me or post another Y!A question.

With respect for how going on exchange will affect your credits in school, that depends on MANY factors, mostly the school that you now attend and the school that you attend while on exchange. You will have to check with your school counselor. To give you an idea of what MIGHT happen, I'll tell you what our school would do (I live in Wyoming). If an exchange student goes to a foreign school that is accredited by the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA), it would be just like going to any other accredited school here in the USA - grades and credits would transfer, there would just bee some paperwork involved. If not, it would be like going to a home school - credits could transfer, but not grades (which MIGHT affect GPA and school raking).

Again, it is absolutely imperative that you talk to your school counselor. Remember that no exchange program can tell a school what to accept, they can only help you get the information you need to give to your school so that the school can decide.

If you have not already picked out an exchange organization, please make sure that they are listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org).

    Good luck to you!

How much Japanese do you need to (or should) know before taking part in a student exchange program to Japan?

I'm interested in going to japan, probably with Student Exchange Australia, does anyone have experience with them? I'm thinking of doing the 1 year program. How much Japanese do you need to (or should) know before taking part in a student exchange program to Japan? While I am not familiar with Student Exchange Australia, I have lived in Japan for 12 years and seen a lot of exchange students coming and going. I think the answer depends on your goals - do you want to become a fluent speaker, or just have an interesting cultural experience?

If you want to become fluent, I would recommend trying to be placed in the countryside, at arms length from the big cities. There will be fewer English speakers there, and fewer distractions. Conversely, it's possible to live in Tokyo for many years, and not pick up much Japanese at all. You can gain great fluency in one year if you surround yourself with good Japanese friends.

As to how much you need to know before going? You could get by with just learning the basic polite greetings, as most of what you learn beyond that may just make you nervous and clam up when you finally get to Japan.

If you really wanted to give yourself a head start, just concentrate for a couple of weeks on learning the two basic 'alphabets' of katakana and hiragana. They are easy to learn, and will give you the best foundation to work on. Most people I've seen who don't master those two written systems (and doggedly stick with 'romaji' - transliterating the words into the English alphabet) do not get past the basics. Just get yourself some big notepads and write, write, write them over and over until you can memorize them. It may be daunting at first, but you will appreciate the work when you get there.

Japan is a wonderful country, with highs and lows just like any other culture. The only other thing to take is an open mind, and you will have a fantastic time! How much Japanese do you need to (or should) know before taking part in a student exchange program to Japan?I'm not sure HOW MUCH Japanese you should know, but you should try to learn as much as you can.

Japan has a culture built around respect, and as with any country, learning their language is the best way to earn their favor.

It's not too hard to learn Japanese. I talked to this man at my barber shop about wanting to learn and he hooked me up with this learn Japanese tutorial book.

How should I get ready for my forgien exchange student?

A foreign exchange student is coming to live in our household and we wanted some ideas for how to get ready for her?How should I get ready for my forgien exchange student? It's great that you are hosting a student! My husband and I have hosted 5 so far (each for an academic year).

You don't note whether you are a host parent or host sibling. Most (if not all) of what I will write could be useful for either one.

I HIGHLY recommend communicating with her before she gets here. Email and chat programs are great for this. It helps break the ice. You can't get a full picture of what each other are like through written communications, but you'll get a good introduction.

I assume that the physical requirements are taken care of - she has a room (or at least a bed) with a set or two of %26quot;linens%26quot;, a closet has been cleared out (or at least some space in a shared closet), a small supply of thumb tacks or other hanging apparatus for pictures has been supplied, etc.

You should learn a little about her country - at least enough to find it on a map. (If she's from a large country, find her city.) Google Earth is really cool for looking up places far away. It would be nice if you could say hello or such in her language. I always make a sign that says %26quot;Welcome to your new American home%26quot; in both English and the native language of our kids.

Some host families have asked what the favorite color of their students is and painted the student's room that color.

If the student has not been enrolled in your school, you should get a class catalog so that you can help her choose her classes.

You should absolutely send pictures of you, your family members, and your home to her. She's going to be nervous about her exchange!

These are just a few suggestions. If she isn't in the USA already, be ready for some strong jet lag the first few days.

Good luck to you! Feel free to email me.How should I get ready for my forgien exchange student? It depends on what country they are coming from. Try to learn some words from their language. How do I apply to host a foreign exchange student?

i have no real sources or personal experiences to back up AFS, but i'm currently applying to be an exchange student myself, and AFS seems promising to me :)How do I apply to host a foreign exchange student?I keep losing what I post here .. I meant to recommend to you that a good book, that could possibly help you with adding some insight into %26quot;men and things%26quot; ... have you heard of the series of several books, that begin with %26quot;Clan of the Cave Bear%26quot;. I recommend it highly.

I'm afraid Yahoo keeps acting up on me, so this is maybe unrelated to this question, as I tried to relocate the question about teh books you sought some rec's for ... I recommended Michener, regards history, and the life of Judy Garland is also interesting, having read %26quot;Over the Rainbow%26quot; ... that's a biography of her. But highly recommended which I think would be quite enjoyable for an independent and high spirited girl as you seem, should be great reading. Don't compare with movie -- the movie was %26quot;nada%26quot;.

  • How hard is it to be a foreign exchange student?

So, there's this girl in my art class from Germany, and I've always thought it would really really cool if I could be a foreign exchange student in another country for maybe half a year to a year. It would have to be an English speaking country, because I don't speak anything else fluently. It's just an idea - I haven't talked to my parents or anything about it yet. So I'm guessing it would be a lot of money, but like, approximately how much? And would anyone recommend doing this or not doing this? Help? Oh, and I'm a sophomore in high school. How hard is it to be a foreign exchange student?Hey.

Im from New Zealand and just got back from doing a studnet exchange in Brazil...

Being a student exchange isnt the easiest thing in the world, but it is sooooo rewarding. It was by far the best thing i ever did by going on this exchange. I have learnt so much and had such a great time there that i cant wait to be able to go back there someday.

Im sure if you decide to do an exchange you will love it - here is some advice for you: if you are unsure about 1 year or 6 months - choose 6 months... every student i have met that chose 6 months always wanted to stay the whole year and a year goes REALLLY fast... (you can always go home earlier if you dont like it when you are on a 1 year exchange but if you choose 6 months you cant extend it!

Go to http://www.afs.org to find out all the details about an AFS exchange (the largest exchange program in the world and the one i did)

the cost depends on where you are going.... my trip from NZ to Brazil was $10,000NZD but you can apply for grants and loans and do fundraising.... it seems like so much but it really isnt - it is so worth it!

good luck with it.... DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!! it will be the best decision of your life - it was the best thing i have ever done...

if you want any more info contact me by emailing explicit101@hotmail.com if you want....

OOOOOHHHH by the way - i 100% recommend going to a country that DOESNT speak english - when i went to Brazil i didnt speak a word of portuguese and now i speak it fluently... it is so much more rewarding going somewhere that is completly different to your own country - i recommend Brazil -you would LOVE it.....

Or if you really want to go to an english speaking country come to New Zealand :P and send me an email.... i might even be able to give you a tour of my country :)

    good luck with your decision.....

How do I get involved in a foreign exchange program?

I'm interested in being apart of some kind of foreign exchange program (high school), where I can go to a school in a different country for a semester, something like that. I have no idea how to apply for it nor if I can apply for. I'm from the state of Florida if that helps, and I am in a Private school. How do I get involved in a foreign exchange program?Just be careful on Yahoo Answers ... many of the %26quot;reps%26quot; are paid to recruit new students and troll this forum looking for questions similar to this.

Anyway ... a google search will bring up plenty of programs (well, the are actually companies, not programs).

From personal experience, stay away from YFU. They are not very helpful or eager to act if something goes wrong with your arrangements or your exchange. Additionally, others have told me that many of the bios (hosts and students) are 100% fiction. It is not fun to find out that your family has 5 dogs, if you told YFU you are allergic, and then nothing happens, but a bunch of excuses.

Not to mention YFU is one of the most expensive. How do I get involved in a foreign exchange program? It depends, firstly a lot of my friends are in or have been in foreign exchange and they ALL say its not worth it to go for a semester, but rather definitely go for a year if you can manage! Good programs include the Rotary Club and EF, I personally prefer Rotary Club and am going to try and go with them. Google Rotary Club youth exchange and read the brochure for students, I hope it helps. It really did for me. :)

How would I go about starting the foreign exchange student process?

I have recently been considering becoming a foreign exchange student next year. I am a sophomore in high school in the U.S. and think it would be an amazing experience to have. I would prefer to go to an English speaking country and live with a host family, but I also think it would be cool to learn a new language. Any suggestions on where I should start my search? I have looked at many, many web sites, but just don't know where to start! It's a little over whelming to say the least. Any advice? How would I go about starting the foreign exchange student process?Hi,

One piece of advice you got up here was good -- you need to hurry if you want to go next year! Many programs have already closed applications or will soon be doing so.

Which brings me to selecting your program. First, make sure it's on the CSIET list (www.csiet.org). Also, check with your school counselor to see what he/she recommends. A program is only as good as its local representative. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary, and YFU are reliable everywhere.

All of these programs place you with a host family.

About your country, one of the biggest benefits of an exchange years is language immersion! Take advantage of that and go where you will learn one!

Good luck! :)How would I go about starting the foreign exchange student process? To become an exchange student this coming Fall, most programs are already full, and especially for English speaking areas like Australia, New Zealand, and England. Plus your cutting close to the deadline in most programs. I would suggest going next year. (I will be going in 2009 through AFS).

Like you, I started off wanting to go to a country that spoke english, especially Australia and New Zealand! But then I realized that there are SO many countries out there and I shouldn't limit myself to just english speaking places. Learning a new language would be cool, and make the exchange more worth while.

How do I best profit from a currency exchange?

Im wanting to transfer some of my US money into my UK account, but do not understand the way the exchange rate works.. Do I wait until the dollar is at its weakest against the pound, or wait until the dollar is strong to get a better profit from conversion?

Can somebody explain this to me?How do I best profit from a currency exchange? You wait until the dollar is strong against the pound.

The stronger dollars buys more pounds.

But the fluctuation with the pound and dollar are slow to move( unlike the Euro).

Unless your talking about a lot of money, you can wait, but remember it can also work against you( if the dollar weakens).

If it;s a few hundred dollars, then just exchange it( you'll also pay a fee for that). How do I best profit from a currency exchange? The dollar vs pound is always fluctuating. So, even if you make a quick profit on the conversion, you wont really benefit from it unless you actually spend that money. It's quite possible that the rates will shift again and you'll be back to where you started.

The only way to make significant profits is through FOREX trading, which involves substantial risks as well as a high degree of understanding of the currency markets.

How do some countries manage a fixed exchange rage?

Some caribbean countries have a fixed exchange rate between their currency and the U.S. dollar. How is it possible for the exchange rate not to change according to market conditions? I understand that it is easy for them to print more of their own currency if there is more demand for it, but what if they are running out of U.S. dollars for people wanting to exchange their currency into USD? They can't print it.How do some countries manage a fixed exchange rage?In a fixed exchange rate regime, the government is committed to intervene in the foreign exchange market to ensure that its own currency is maintained at the published level against the reference currency, for example the US$. A fixed exchange rate regime has certain advantages: it makes international trade and investment easier and cheaper because it removes the foreign exchange risk and the costs of hedging.

However, there is a major downside: consider a country with a trade deficit, let's say with its major trading partner the US. The imports are higher than the exports, this means that the demand for US$ tends to put pressure on the price of the domestic currency. To maintain the exchange rate at the predefined level, the government must intervene in the foreign exchange market and buy domestic currency by selling US$. This would lead to a loss of foreign currency reserves and a contraction of the domestic money supply, leading to a fall in salaries and prices (deflation) until equilibrium is restored. Once the foreign currency reserves are used up, the government will be forced to devalue the domestic currency. The opposite happens when the country has a trade surplus against the US: the government has to intervene in the foreign exchange market to by selling domestic currency to maintain the fixed exchange rate. The higher supply of money will put upward pressure on domestic prices (inflation).

In a fixed rate regime, the government in fact loses control over the domestic economic policy and is open to speculative attacks: if speculators perceive that the value of the domestic currency is not at the market equilibrium, they will attack the exchange rate, betting against the government, assuming that the government will run out of foreign currency reserves and will have to adjust the fixed exchange rate to the market price. This is what happened to the Hong Kong $ during the Asian crises in 1997. In this case, however, it turned out that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority had sufficient levels of currency reserves to fight off the speculative attacks (by George Soros) and was therfore able to maintian the fixed exchange rate against the US$.

How hard is it to become a foreign exchange student?

Ok I really want to become a foreign exchange student. I have been thinking about this for a while. Im going into the 10th grade when school starts again. I am wondering if it is hard to become one. Is it a long process and is it hard to get accepted? I also want to know if it is really expensive and if my school or the state will help me pay for it?How hard is it to become a foreign exchange student? It is expensive and no, neither your school nor your state will help you. The great majority of exchanges for high school students are done through private organizations (a few churches do it).

The top three are AFS, YFU and Rotary. Rotary is the cheapest, but most competitive.

You need to contact one of them to apply. You can ask your counselor for information and a local contact, or go to the website.

    http://www.yfu.org/

    http://www.afs.org/afs_or/home

http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYoutHow hard is it to become a foreign exchange student?Unlike university, becoming a foreign exchange student in high school would mean that you will have to financialy support your tuition and expenses out of your own pockets.

It's somewhat expensive but worth it if you can afford it.How hard is it to become a foreign exchange student?'Ello there~

Studying abroad can, indeed, be expensive. It all depends on what organization you're going with, where you want to go, and what you're willing to do to go. The 'big three' organizations are AFS, YFU, and Rotary. These are the safest, most reliable organizations you will find. AFS and YFU tend to be much more expensive than Rotary. Exact prices for AFS and YFU are listed on their sites, while exact Rotary Youth Exchange prices depend on your local Rotary club. Before you worry about prices, though, realize that there are scholarships out there, and you always have the ability to fundraise on your own. While most scholarships are partial, some, like the Yoshi Hattori Memorial Scholarship (AFS only/Japan), and Congress-Bundestag (Germany) are full scholarships for a whole school year. If you'd rather not have to go through the hassle of applying for scholarships, Rotary is the way to go. You'll have to keep in mind that it's not common to get your first choice of country with Rotary, so you'll need to be more open to different places.

So we've covered pricing and organizations in general.

As far as the process goes, it depends on your organization. All applications will involve a great deal of time to fill out. The way the process usually works is: pre-application, waiting, full application, waiting, interview, waiting, and more waiting for acceptance from both your home country and host country and host family information. So, there's a lot of waiting to do. AFS and YFU tend to be easy to be into as long as you've got proper grades (usually no lower than a 2.8 GPA). Rotary, once again, depends on your local club and whether they're familiar with sending students abroad or not (some clubs are not).

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me.

    Good Luck!

  • How are the exchange programes in the USA?

Hi I would like to know how are the exchange programs and if the exchange student are well received, and everything you can say about it.How are the exchange programes in the USA?There are a LOT of exchange programs to the US -- over a thousand, but they are not all created equal. The best ones are endorsed by the US Department of State and CSIET, which is an organization that regulates exchange organizations.

Doing an exchange to the United States is an incredibly valuable experience, especially if you want to improve your English, and learn more about both the world, and yourself. Being an exchange student is a growing experience -- you will learn so much!

In terms of being accepted, it depends on where you go. Most students don't go to large cities, which is actually good -- those cities and schools are large and already have an international population, which generally means exchange students blend in to the background, and you may not feel very recognized by people. Smaller towns, on the other hand, can provide the opposite experience -- you may be the only exchange student around, and be a superstar! Exchange students have been known to become the hero of the football team, the star of the school play, you name it.

By and large, families who take in exchange students are really excited to have you. Host families in the US receive no money for hosting, so you know they are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. Many Americans don't have the opportunity to travel, and so you are bringing the world to them! They will not only show you the American way of life, but will want to know all about your culture, too.

Now, there are some requirements for coming to the United States, just so you are prepared. You must be able to speak English well -- my organization has a scale of 1 to 10 and you must score a 4 or above. You must also have a C average or higher at your school at home, and must also get a C average or higher when you are in the US. You will go through a competitive screening process that involves an application, several interviews, references, and a review of your academics. An exchange program costs, on average, $9,000 to $11,000, depending on your country and currency. Once you are accepted, your organization will find you a host family and get you enrolled in school. Exchange students agree to several things when they come to the United States, which includes following the rules of their host families (including curfews and chores), not drinking any alcohol, no drugs and no sexual activity while they are abroad.
