Now think about this with larger amounts of money, you could earn alot more by putting your money into a bank where the IR is higher. Let's say you have US$ and the UK Bank of England increases its IR from 2% to 3%. When you move your money, you are increasing the supply of US$ in the market (ECO 101: increase in supply lowers the price), you are also wanting UK (increase in demand for increases the price) - put these two factors together and you will find that the gains strength. First, research the program you plan to use (I recommend AFS and YFU -- I believe Rotary is now closed for next year). Show how the program is certified by the state department and CSIET -- both very important. Give a history of the program.
Second, research the money. How much will it cost? If you have the money, show that. You'll also need about $200 - $300 a month spending money, and perhaps you can show how you are SAVING them that amount of money by being gone.
Third, give an overview of the top three countries that you are picking. Show the history, culture and explain WHY you picked them.
Fourth, discuss how this will help your future. Colleges and universities love exchange students and often offer preferred admissions and/or scholarships for exchange students. (YFU even has a list of them.) Also, point out how much a second language will benefit you when you join the work force -- an average of $10,000 per year for each language!
Fifth, sit down with your high school counselor and work out a plan so you graduate on time (unless you will be a senior, then it COULD set back your graduation time a semester). Be sure to include any summer and/or correspondence course you might have to take.
Sixth, interview a couple of exchange students at your school. Have THEM tell about it.
THEN, after you've given your presentation, invite the students (and maybe their program representative) to meet with your parents to answer questions.

They also used to offer them for shorter stays although I think they may have stopped offering those scholarships last year.
If you can do 10 months then I'd really recommend it. If you can't do it because of school or something like that's too bad but if u have the chance I really recommend doing the whole 10 months!!
Once you get to 5 or 6 months your Japanese gets to a really good level and making friends is so much easier and well everything just starts to go so well!
You should also look at Wep if you haven't already because perhaps they offer scholarships but I'm not sure.

When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?
Whenever I've looked at purchasing a car from a dealer (not many occasions as it's a rip off) the cars they sell always have no tax. This is then an added expense of 190 to get the car legal for the road. However, when I ask any dealer to value my car for a part-exchange, they always ask how much tax is left and insist that it is left on the car. If I say I'm refunding the tax, they adjust the price by a couple hundred quid. Is this the same as leaving up to 190 sellotaped to your windscreen when you chop in a car? Is this widely practiced?When you part-exchange a car do the dealers just cash in the remaining car tax?I used to work as a car salesman. Generally this is the case, although there is nothing to stop you from asking if you can keep it, all we used to do was send them back and get a refund (although believe it or not keeping a tax disc would not mean that the salesman got more commission - it was not taken into account in the price of your car) Remember, any valuation for your car is negotiable, a good source is glass' guide (used by the trade) you can value your own car online (they charge a fee - but remember you will probably get more than this extra for your car by having the insider knowledge) these valuations do not take into account any remaining tax on the car, therefore it should not be deducted if you ask to keep the tax disc. I would always suggest checking something like Glass' before going to a dealer, that way you have a fair idea of what they are going to offer you. One other tip is to simply ask if they will tax the car for you included in the price. Most dealers will, if it is the difference between getting a deal or not, only do this at the point where you are actually going to buy the car though. I.e tell the salesman, if you give me 12 months road tax, (they will never give you a full tank) but 1/2 tank of fuel, and try for something like mats, or headlamp protectors (these do not cost them much) then you will buy the car TODAY. It puts them on the spot to meet your demands then, and will almost certainly work.
One other tip - all dealerships will try to sell you both paint protection treatement and gap insurance. Never buy these at the prices they offer you them at, it is very easy to get at least 100 off each product - I have never paid more than 99 for paint protection and know that some dealers charge as much as 599!

If there's any weeks remaining on the disc, just remember to pocket it before you leave the car. It's just another game they play to improve their profit margins. Also make sure you've got just enough petrol to get it to the dealer. You can be pretty sure there's next to no fuel in your new car when you get it.

If your part exchange is not good enough for them to sell on their forecourt then they will sell the car on to a 'Trader' You can be as sure as hell that they won't let that car go with the remaining tax. One other tip - all dealerships will try to sell you both paint protection treatement and gap insurance. Never buy these at the prices they offer you them at, it is very easy to get at least 100 off each product - I have never paid more than 99 for paint protection and know that some dealers charge as much as 599!

I have been dying to travel and do a high school exchange program in Europe- the oppertunity has come for me to spend my junior year of high school learning and living in Italy. But the program costs $36,000. Thats about $25,000 more than my family can affard. Unfortunatly, my family never qualifies for financial aid, so I cannot even hope of getting money from need-based scholarships with the program. I would really like to do this, but I have no idea of how to go about asking my parents.
I of course will get a job and fund raise like crazy to help pay for it.

I'm interested in going to japan, probably with Student Exchange Australia, does anyone have experience with them? I'm thinking of doing the 1 year program.How much Japanese do you need to (or should) know before taking part in a student exchange program to Japan?While I am not familiar with Student Exchange Australia, I have lived in Japan for 12 years and seen a lot of exchange students coming and going. I think the answer depends on your goals - do you want to become a fluent speaker, or just have an interesting cultural experience?
If you want to become fluent, I would recommend trying to be placed in the countryside, at arms length from the big cities. There will be fewer English speakers there, and fewer distractions. Conversely, it's possible to live in Tokyo for many years, and not pick up much Japanese at all. You can gain great fluency in one year if you surround yourself with good Japanese friends.
As to how much you need to know before going? You could get by with just learning the basic polite greetings, as most of what you learn beyond that may just make you nervous and clam up when you finally get to Japan.
If you really wanted to give yourself a head start, just concentrate for a couple of weeks on learning the two basic 'alphabets' of katakana and hiragana. They are easy to learn, and will give you the best foundation to work on. Most people I've seen who don't master those two written systems (and doggedly stick with 'romaji' - transliterating the words into the English alphabet) do not get past the basics. Just get yourself some big notepads and write, write, write them over and over until you can memorize them. It may be daunting at first, but you will appreciate the work when you get there.
Japan is a wonderful country, with highs and lows just like any other culture. A foreign exchange student is coming to live in our household and we wanted some ideas for how to get ready for her?How should I get ready for my forgien exchange student?It's great that you are hosting a student! My husband and I have hosted 5 so far (each for an academic year).
You don't note whether you are a host parent or host sibling. Most (if not all) of what I will write could be useful for either one.
I HIGHLY recommend communicating with her before she gets here. Email and chat programs are great for this. It helps break the ice. You can't get a full picture of what each other are like through written communications, but you'll get a good introduction.
I assume that the physical requirements are taken care of - she has a room (or at least a bed) with a set or two of %26quot;linens%26quot;, a closet has been cleared out (or at least some space in a shared closet), a small supply of thumb tacks or other hanging apparatus for pictures has been supplied, etc.
You should learn a little about her country - at least enough to find it on a map. (If she's from a large country, find her city.) Google Earth is really cool for looking up places far away. It would be nice if you could say hello or such in her language. I always make a sign that says %26quot;Welcome to your new American home%26quot; in both English and the native language of our kids.
Some host families have asked what the favorite color of their students is and painted the student's room that color.
If the student has not been enrolled in your school, you should get a class catalog so that you can help her choose her classes.
You should absolutely send pictures of you, your family members, and your home to her. She's going to be nervous about her exchange!
These are just a few suggestions. If she isn't in the USA already, be ready for some strong jet lag the first few days.
