How to make friends as an exchange student?

I'm leaving in August on a year-long student exchange program. I'll be staying with a host family in Germany and attending a nearby high school. My German certainly isn't the best, and I'm wondering how I'm ever going to be able to make friends.



I'll be living in a small community, much like I do right now, and I know that schools here tend to be rather cliquey and it's sometimes hard for new students to make friends, barring any language or culture barrier.



How would you go about making friends as an exchange student?

you must be self-confident but NOT TOO confident !!

you will find a lot of friends as long as your German is going better.

try to have a conversation with them first, don't wait for them

be optimistic and show you friendliness



anyway, learning german culture would help you to know more about German people (and their lifestyles) adapt yourself to the environment



and most importantly

DO NOT PANIC, think positive, BE NATURAL :)

I think a strategy that works well for lots of exchange students is to imagine yourself on the other side of the equation. If a foreign student came to your school, what would you find interesting or attracting? And what would make you keep a distance?



Of course, every school community and every culture is different but generally, it helps when you show interest and effort. For example, you can ask other students about (positive!) things you noticed about their culture and let them know that you would like to learn more about it. You can also carry a small notebook with you to write down new words. If the other students see that you have a positive attitude toward their culture, that you are genuinely interested, and that you want to learn, it will be more fun for to share their culture with you and to support you in your learning process.
