How long should you get to know someone before going on the first date?

Just Last week I went out grab some coffee saw this cute guy, we exchanged numbers he called me on friday but I missed the call... Was gonna call him the weekend but with the holiday and everything I decided to just call him tomorrow . Should I actually text him first or just call? And Normally once you meet some one how long to to wait until you go on a first date ? Do you talk a while (Few weeks) so that you can get comfortable with the person or addmitely so if you can see if you like them or not?

It doesn't have to have strings attached. I would just call tomorrow some guys just aren't into the whole texting thing and it makes it more personal when you pick up the phone and call.
